The Gambling Commission, recognized as a leading authority in compliance with Canada's gambling regulations, has just announced that they will soon release a total of four consultations as part of the ongoing review of the Gambling Act. This new development supplements the White Paper released earlier this year.
The proposed policies
Following extensive dialogues held between the initial release of the White Paper last April and now, the commission has confirmed that the upcoming four proposals this month will encompass Age Verification, Online Game Design, Enhanced Cross-Selling, and Direct Marketing , while also thoroughly addressing financial vulnerabilities faced by online casinos.
The last aspect has particularly attracted attention over recent months. Financial risks have been observed to pose significant challenges and debates for both casino operators and players alike. The proposed framework envisions a two-tier verification system that casino operators will need to implement for users —this is aimed at both validation and the mitigation of financial risks, including affordability assessments.
These affordability assessments have sparked controversy and may inadvertently limit access for a variety of players with differing financial backgrounds. Furthermore, individuals would be required to provide personal information to the casino, which may include submitting bank statements.
This information will be confirmed in detail upon the official release of the four proposals expected later this week.
The consultation process
Tim Miller, the Executive Director of the Gambling Commission, oversees the consultation initiative. He noted that the drafting and consultation stages are targeting a completion date by mid-October of this year .
In addition to the aforementioned four proposals, the Commission has also stated it will introduce two additional initiatives aimed at enhancing regulations related to personal management licenses and reinforcing procedures for regulatory panels.
